TelkomGroup, through Telin, inaugurated the Pukpuk Submarine Cable System (Pukpuk 1) in Jayapura, Papua, in May 2026. The system establishes the first direct cross-border submarine cable connection between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

A new route between Jayapura and Vanimo

Pukpuk 1 links TelkomGroup’s cable landing infrastructure in Jayapura with PNG DataCo’s network in Vanimo. Through onward connections, the route supports access to other locations in Papua New Guinea and wider international cable systems.

The additional route improves network diversity for Eastern Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Greater route diversity helps reduce dependence on a single path and strengthens continuity when another connection is disrupted.

Supporting digital growth in the region

The system was developed through cooperation between Telin and PNG DataCo. A commercial agreement signed alongside the inauguration further strengthened the two companies’ collaboration on regional telecommunications infrastructure.

Beyond network resilience, the connection is expected to support digital inclusion, cross-border services, and economic opportunity. Pukpuk 1 gives communities and organisations a stronger foundation for accessing digital platforms across the Asia-Pacific region.
